New Year, New Me! How many times do we use this mantra when it comes to the new? We all have these grand plans, and long lists of things that we want to change about our health. But, most of us will abandon these new habits within 2 weeks of starting them.
The biggest reasons these plans get forgotten:
- We try to add too many things into our lives at once
- Our lives are already so busy we can’t actually keep up with all the new things we want to add into our day.
So, how do we combat this? A fantastic book by James Clear called, Atomic Habits goes into detail about something called Habit Stacking. This is where you write a list of all the things you want to add into your day to improve your health. This might include things like:
- Drinking a large glass of water in the morning.
- Reading 5 pages of my book in the morning instead of looking at my phone.
- Turning my TV off 40 minutes before I want to go to bed.
Instead of trying to add all of these new habits into your life in one go, you simply take on one habit each week. The best bit is you then take the new habit and you add it on to something that you already do. This is the secret that's going to help you stick to it!
For example, if you want to make sure you drink a big glass of water every morning why not add this onto something you do every morning like brushing your teeth. So your habit becomes I will drink a big glass of water straight after I have brushed my teeth. Once you have mastered this, you can then stack another habit on top of that. Meaning, your new habit will then be; after my big glass of water I will always take my supplements. We promise that before you know it that long unachievable and daunting list has become your everyday routine!
