What is the difference between a Chiropractor and an Osteopath ?
When most people come to see a Chiropractor they’re venturing into the world of complementary and alternative medicine. This umbrella term covers a whole host of different therapies that most people have little understanding of exactly what they do and how they can help you. This is especially true for Chiropractic and many people will end up coming to a Chiropractor because their friends or family have recommended them after experiencing the wide range of benefits Chiropractic has to offer.
Amongst many other questions one we get commonly asked is what is the difference between a Chiropractor and an Osteopath. There are many similarities between Chiropractors and Osteopaths as they both originated at a similar time in America in the 1800’s. The biggest difference between the two therapies is their core philosophies and the impact they have on the body and it’s ability to heal.
Your body and everything that happens within it is controlled by your brain and the nervous system. Your brain is protected by the skull and your spinal cord and exiting nerves are protected by your spine. Your spine is made up of 52 joints that should all be moving but when your spine goes through trauma such as a road traffic accident, sitting for too long, using a mobile phone or a sporting accident then the joints of the spine can stop moving and start to impact the spinal cord and exiting nerves.
This impact on the spinal cord and nerves means your brain and body can no longer communicate properly and things like healing, function, energy and sleep can all start to slow down or stop completely. Therefore this is what a Chiropractor is trained to assess and correct within your spine, we look for the joints that aren’t moving properly, we provide a chiropractic adjustment to the spine and this then allows any impact on the nervous system to be released. Your brain and body can communicate at their best and you can heal and function optimally so your body can get rid of any aches and pains you may be experiencing.
An Osteopath by comparison will look to improve the flow of fluids around the body like blood and lymph to restore healing of the body and therefore treatments may be slightly different to a Chiropractor with more focus on muscular structures.
